1998-1999
We first began in 1998. A friend of ours was quite convinced that Y2K was serious. He began supplying dry packed food. He built a web site. We didn’t have a computer and didn’t intend to get one. They were all going to crash anyway. Our friend could not find a good long term storage seed kit, so he convinced us to produce one.
We wanted seed that would grow all across the country in many different climates and soil conditions. We wanted a seed kit that would last with high germination rates for many years. We traveled out to the National Seeds Storage Lab in Fort Collins, Colorado, and they trained us how to prepare seed so it could be frozen. They directed us on how to package it so the germination would last 50 years or more. (The National Seed Storage Lab collects seeds of all plants and stores a few of each.)
We seriously followed their advice. We built a drying facility to reduce the moisture content of the seed. We bought a state of the art seed moisture tester. For the past twelve years, we have supplied those who want to be prepared.
The situation hasn’t changed a whole lot. There is still a convincing need to be prepared.
